Thin Cities

100 Years of the Picadilly Line

New art of the Picadilly line December 2006 - April 2007

Welcome to Thin Cities

Thin Cities Map

Thin Cities is a series of new artworks commissioned by Platform for Art to appear in specific stations along the Piccadilly line

The projects are the most ambitious to date by Platform for Art and have been commissioned as part of celebrations to mark the centenary of the Piccadilly line.

The project responds to the theme of past, present and future and is inspired by the travels of the 14th Century explorer Marco Polo, as retold in the book Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. Each artist has engaged with a different aspect of the Piccadilly line and its history, resulting in a site specific group exhibition on a grand scale. As explorers and storytellers themselves, the artists reveal new perspectives on London through their artworks.

Website
This extension to the Platform for Art web pages has been developed to accompany Thin Cities. Here you can make a virtual visit to each station on the Piccadilly line and discover something new about its history and the people who live and work along the line.

You can see images and read descriptions of all the artworks, leave comments about the work or tell us a story or anecdote about the Piccadilly line which will be published as part of the website. In return you can receive your own limited edition artwork in the form of specially commissioned oyster card holders by some of the artists.

Performances, Talks and Events
There are a number of live performances taking place in February so look out for further details about those on the News page as well as talks and other events.

Weekly Podcasts
Don’t forget to download the weekly Zoorama podcasts the work by Heather and Ivan Morrison. You will also be able to hear this at Knightsbridge station throughout 2007.

Look out for more new works in the second phase of Thin Cities in 2007.

Platform for Art
Platform for Art is London Underground's art programme; designed to showcase and celebrate a rich and vibrant art scene.
We produce high calibre artworks in unexpected places on the London Underground network. The programme enhances the millions of journeys completed on a daily basis and aims to promote a greater understanding of the Tube as a cultural and social environment.

For Thin Cities thanks to Francesca Alaimo who was responsible for collecting all the information contained on the station pages as well as the individual photos of each station.
